While you still have your 9-to-5 safety net, start drumming up leads, contacts, even a few small freelance gigs you can handle in your spare time. Take as much time as you need to make the transition—a few weeks or a few months. But do start today. The sooner you establish a name for yourself, the sooner work will come your way.
